The route

From the visitor centre car park at Ham Hill we set out along the eastern ramparts at 10.00, cross the southern field by the woodland gate, drop down through the lower meadow to the village of Norton-sub-Hamdon, climb back up via the south-west spur, and rejoin the visitor centre by 13.30 for a small picnic and a piece of cake. Six gentle miles in total. Two stiles. One short steep section. The going is firm in dry weather and a little muddy in wet — please dress for both.

What to bring

  • Walking boots or sturdy trainers; wellingtons are over-dressed.
  • A waterproof. April in Somerset is honestly unpredictable.
  • A reusable cup. Tea and coffee will be provided at the war memorial and at the visitor centre.
  • A small packed lunch, or £6 cash for the bring-and-buy lunch counter.
  • Walking poles if you use them — the south-west spur has a short steep descent.

Accessibility

The main route includes two field stiles and one steep descent and is not suitable for wheelchairs or unsupported mobility scooters. We offer a parallel three-mile flat route along the upper ramparts which is wheelchair-friendly (with a sturdy outdoor chair); please indicate this on the registration form and a Rotary marshal will be in touch to discuss your needs. We can offer a quiet rest area at the visitor centre with seating and warmth. Assistance dogs are welcome on either route.

Getting there

Ham Hill Country Park is two miles south-west of Stoke-Sub-Hamdon and is signposted from the A303 and the A3088. The visitor centre car park (TA14 6RW) is the start and finish point. Free parking on the day for registered walkers. The 81 bus from Yeovil stops at Stoke-Sub-Hamdon village, a 25-minute walk from the car park.

Marshals and safety

The walk is marshalled by Rotary Club of Yeovil with first-aid cover from St John Ambulance. There are toilets at the visitor centre and at the war memorial. The walk goes ahead in all weather short of severe — if the forecast changes the day before, we will write to every registered walker with an update.

The cause

This year’s walk raises unrestricted funds for the Friends’ Equipment Appeal. We will close the 2025/26 equipment list at the AGM in September and announce the next appeal at the Anniversary Supper. Last year’s Spring Walk raised £4,310 for the appeal.
